I was honoured to have been a careers guest speaker last month at REACH (www.reachhuron.ca) and the students asked a pretty popular question‚ ‚ “What should I wear to a job interview at a barn?”
Great question – clearly the obvious rules of wearing business attire don’t apply here…or do they?‚ Business attire for us means EQUINE BUSINESS ATTIRE.‚ So, dress appropriately for the horse industry.‚ ‚ ‚ My recommendation would be to dress for an interview as if you were ready to work.‚ This gives an employer a chance to get a feel for you and to visualise you in their barn or business.‚ It also means you are dressed appropriately for a walk around the barn – Getting a barn tour is usually a good sign that the interview is going well)‚ I.E.‚ ‚ Avoid flip flops, Uggs etc
Applying for barn/stable help/groom positions?‚ Don’t show up in your heavy duty Carhartts instead clean jeans, a polo shirt and some clean barn boots seem appropriate – Clean and Tidy but not too dressed up.
If the place you are applying to has a uniform? (Vet’s office, Rehab Clinic, Barn or Retail for example) follow their lead.‚ If they wear khakis and a polo shirt – wear a similar ensemble to show how well you’d fit in.‚ you never know – they might put you to work right away…‚
Whatever you wear be comfortable, be yourself and be on time
